When the Mayor determines that an employee or former employee of the District is indebted to the District of Columbia government ("government") because of an erroneous payment made to or on behalf of the employee, the Mayor may, after 30 days notice to the employee, collect the amount of the indebtedness as provided in this subchapter.

Law 6-144 was introduced in Council and assigned Bill No. 6-177, which was referred to the Committee on Government Operations. The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on June 10, 1986 and June 24, 1986, respectively. Signed by the Mayor on July 8, 1986, it was assigned Act No. 6-186 and transmitted to both Houses of Congress for its review.
