    Legislative History of Laws

    Law 1-117, the "Uniform Arbitration Act," was introduced in Council and assigned Bill No. 1-140, which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary and Criminal Law. The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on November 23, 1976, and December 7, 1976, respectively. Enacted without signature by the Mayor on January 13, 1977, it was assigned Act No. 1-209 and transmitted to both Houses of Congress for its review.

    Law 3-85, the "Enacted Titles Numbering and Amendment Act of 1980," was introduced in Council and assigned Bill No. 3-296, which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on May 20, 1980, and June 3, 1980, respectively. Signed by the Mayor on June 20, 1980, it was assigned Act No. 3-202 and transmitted to both Houses of Congress for its review.

    Repeal of Uniform Arbitration Act: D.C. Law 17-111, § 3, Feb. 27, 2008, 55 DCR 1847, provides: "Effective July 1, 2009, Chapter 43 of Title 16 of the District of Columbia Official Code is repealed."

The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on November 24, 1987, and December 8, 1987, respectively. Signed by the Mayor on December 22, 1987, it was assigned Act No. 7-124 and transmitted to both Houses of Congress for its review.

    Law 12-81, the "Technical Amendments Act of 1998," was introduced in Council and assigned Bill No. 12-408, which was referred to the Committee of the Whole. The Bill was adopted on first and second readings on November 4, 1997, and December 4, 1997, respectively.     <Section 3 of D.C. Law 17-111 provides: "Effective July 1, 2009, Chapter 43 of Title 16 of the District of Columbia Official Code is repealed." Chapter 44 of Title 16 governs agreements to arbitrate made on or after February 27, 2008, and agreements made before February 27, 2008, if the parties to the arbitration agreement so agree in a record. Otherwise Chapter 43 of Title 16 governs agreements made before February 27, 2008, until July 1, 2009.>
